Contact relatives and gather photos of the family the child has never seen before. Ask them for a brief description of when the photo was taken. Gather these photos into an album for her to keep.

GIVE COMFORT WITH LINKING OBJECTS.

Linking objects are objects that bring the child comfort and remind him of things that he’s lost. A linking object can be anything that has meaning to him—the key to the family home, a well-worn stuffed animal or blanket, a piece of jewelry, a baseball, a parent’s wedding band, a knickknack from a family trip, and so on.

Give the child permission to carry the object around so that he feels comforted by it throughout the day. As he holds the object he’ll be reminded of the reality of his loss. This is good as it helps him separate what was from what is—and begin to accept that his life has changed.

Help kids understand how linking objects help them when they are having a hard time.
